Fellows New Teacher Conference Award

The Fellows Endowment Fund, created in 1984, enabled the STANYS Fellowship Committee to establish a conference award for new teachers starting in 1992. The award supports the attendance of a second or third year teacher at the annual STANYS Conference. Room, board (standard double rate), and registration (but not transportation) are covered by this reward.

We are pleased that the fund has been benefiting promising new educators for a number of years. We hope their association with STANYS will continue to be part of a lifelong commitment to professional development.

Fellows New Teacher Conference Award Recipient 2007

Andrea Costello was recognized by STANYS as a promising new teacher at the 112th Annual Conference. She received a plaque and free attendance at the conference as the recipient of the Fellows New Teacher Conference Award. Ms Costello is a career changer and is currently a second year teacher in a therapeutic support program for Southern Westchester BOCES. At the SW Collaborative High School, she is the only science teacher. She is certified in Living Environment and is working toward certification in Chemistry, as well as an advanced certification in Special Education. The school Principal notes her gift for teaching emotionally needy students. She encourages and challenges her students (who range between the ages of 14 and 20) to be curious and to probe for answers with a style that is engaging and effective.
