STANYS Excellence in Science Teaching Award

Outstanding Teachers Honored in 2008

Three teachers whose careers exemplify STANYS's mission, received the STANYS Excellence in Science Teaching Award at the Annual Conference. Their work showcases excellence in teaching, leading, and providing opportunities for all students to participate in and learn science. Debbie Valerio, an Elementary Science Specialist at the Windham-Ashland-Jewitt Central School in Windham, is honored for her excellence in the classroom and for her commitment to "hands-on" science education. At the intermediate level, Amy Gilbert is praised by her peers at the East Irondequoit Middle School in Rochester, as an outstanding teacher and curriculum leader. Gene Gordon, a physics teacher at Fairport High School in Fairport, is lauded as a dynamic force in the classroom.

Applying for the STANYS Excellence in Science Teaching Award

THE STANYS MISSION

The Science Teachers Association of New York State (STANYS) promotes excellence in science education. Its mission is to work with educators and communities to provide opportunities for all students to participate in and learn science.

To qualify for this award the Excellence in Teaching Entry Form must be submitted with the following:

  1. Philosophy of Science Teaching
  2. Describe your vision of what constitutes excellence in science teaching and learning.
  3. Implementation of Philosophy of Science Teaching
  4. Describe how you attempt to make your philosophy a reality. For example, you may describe your approaches in teaching sample lessons or units, projects, videos, special programs, community services, etc.
  5. Effectiveness of the Philosophy
  6. Provide evidence to demonstrate your success in implementing your philosophy. Evidence could include, but is not limited to activities such as: sample student work, videos, pictures, slides, newspaper articles, published work, and letters of support from people such as students, parents, colleagues, administrators, supervisors, etc.
  7. Professional Involvement
  8. Describe professional activities in which you have been involved in the past three years. Activities could include, but are not limited to:
